There are times when it can be hard to feel sorry for our mayor. There are times when it can be hard to feel sorry for his cabinet members. But it is difficult not to feel sorry for them after the way their budget process was hijacked at the 9th February council meeting.

Millions need to be saved. Council services are threatened. In times of austerity sacrifices must be made. We are all in this together. But Hartlepool's councillors want £66,000 to make sure there is enough money for their next pay rise. They are clearly not in this together - they're not even on the same planet!

I refer to W. Hunters letter, which was published in the Hartlepool mail on Thursday 16th February. I totally agree with him that the town needs leadership.
It appears that the Labour party has gone into meltdown; the Conservatives are looking to score political points and the Lib Dems seem to have gone to ground. All this at a time when Hartlepool is faced with cuts to its front line services and having to make front line staff redundant.
