Nominations are now open for the May 2012 Council elections. Hartlepool is having an “all out” election this time due to reduction in councillor numbers from 47 down to 33, boundary changes reducing the wards from 17 down to 11 and ward re-naming. This means everyone will get three votes and will be electing three councillors to represent them. ......

Councillor Wells has been a breath of fresh air in the council chamber since he was elected in May 2010. He has brushed aside the traditional role of an opposition politician – opposing – and he has entered into a new arrangement in which he agrees with everything that the Labour party puts forward. Well done to mayor Stuart Drummond on sacking all six of the backstabbing Labour members in his cabinet. After their failure to support their own budget at council on 23rd February, Mayor Drummond sacked the lot after they had shown that loyalty to their party was much more important to them than any other consideration. ......

In an incredible turn of events, Hartlepool Borough Council descended into farce at its 9th February full council meeting. The Labour party hijacked the budget process and threw the council into turmoil. The rebellion was led by Cllr Christopher Akers Belcher, who tabled an amendment that radically changed a number of key areas of the budget. ......

It must be a lonely time just now for Hartlepool Borough Council’s six Labour cabinet members. Hartlepool has had a Labour MP and a Labour council for almost the entire time since 1945. Apart from a couple of short periods, Hartlepool Council has been dominated by the Labour Party.
So has this loyalty to the Labour Party brought Hartlepool economic success, full employment and well paid jobs? Unfortunately not ......
